What Does It Mean To Be Culturally Competent?

Why Is It Important?

How Do We Create Culturally Competent Individuals and Organizations?

In this 1/2 day workshop, Camille Smith shares a non-threatening approach to becoming culturally competent.

We will look at some guiding principles around cultural competency, discuss barriers to cultural competency, describe unhealthy and healthy practices, and examine several standards in which to plan, measure, and evaluate culturally competent behavior.

Begin your journey.  Cultural competency:

  • Increases respect and mutual understanding among those involved.
  • Increases creativity in problem-solving through new perspectives, ideas, and strategies.
  • Decreases unwanted surprises that might slow progress.
  • Increases participation and involvement of other cultural groups.
  • Increases trust and cooperation.
  • Helps overcome fear of mistakes, competition, or conflict. By understanding and accepting many cultures, everyone is more likely to feel more comfortable in cross-cultural situations.
  • Promotes inclusion and equality.

Camille Smith, Ed.D. has an extensive background in education - from the classroom to developing state-level educational policy.  She brings this experience into the organizational setting to foster healthy collaboration and trust.
